Early Years Learning Framework

At Billy-Beet Childcare and Kindergarten, we embrace the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) while integrating the principles of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, creating a child-led, inquiry-based learning environment. The EYLF emphasizes Belonging, Being, and Becoming, recognizing that children’s early years shape their identity, relationships, and lifelong learning. Similarly, the Reggio Emilia approach views children as capable, competent, and active participants in their own learning journey.

Children as Co-Constructors of Knowledge

In line with EYLF, which values child agency, our approach ensures that children co-create their learning experiences. We view children as researchers, exploring their environment with curiosity and questioning. Learning is not about passive instruction but an interactive process where children’s voices, interests, and discoveries shape the curriculum.

A Holistic, Child-Led Learning Experience

By integrating the EYLF with Reggio Emilia principles, we provide an authentic, meaningful, and developmentally rich learning experience. Our goal is to nurture confident, independent, and creative thinkers who develop a lifelong love of  learning. In our centre, every child’s knowledge, culture, and voice shape the  learning journey, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging, explore their identity, and develop into capable, engaged members of their community.

Areas of Learning

The EYLF encourages rich learning environments that stimulate exploration and development. Inspired by Reggio Emilia’s belief in the environment as the third teacher, our spaces are intentionally designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and independent thinking. Open-ended materials, natural elements, and flexible learning areas allow children to express themselves, experiment, and build deeper understandings.

Both the EYLF and Reggio Emilia approaches recognize the importance of relationships in children’s development. We see families as integral to the learning process and actively engage them in their child’s educational journey.  By fostering strong connections between children, educators, and families, we  create a community of learners where shared experiences and cultural  backgrounds enrich learning.

Play is at the heart of both the EYLF and Reggio Emilia philosophy. It is through play that children investigate, imagine, and create. We provide open-ended projects that allow children to engage in deep thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Instead of fixed lesson plans, we follow the child’s curiosity, documenting their learning process and guiding them toward new discoveries.

In the Reggio-inspired EYLF approach, educators are not instructors but facilitators and co-learners. Our educators listen, observe, and engage in meaningful conversations with children, extending their ideas and  encouraging critical thinking. Through intentional teaching, we guide children toward new perspectives while respecting their natural curiosity and  autonomy.
